Howling Picture Wolf Program Text

Not many people can say that they have heard the soulful howl of a lone wolf. Wolf Programs at the Wild Canid Center allow people to experience this rare and beautiful sound. Because Wolf Programs are held at night you will not be able to see the wolves, but you will be able to hear their song and feel their presence. Wolf Programs also give people a chance to learn about wolves and their fight for survival.

Most of our Wolf Programs consist of two parts, an indoor and an outdoor, depending on the weather. The indoor portion of the Wolf Program begins at 7:30 pm CDT. The program consists of a special slide show and a short movie about wolves, after which there is an opportunity to ask any questions you might have.

After the movie and slide show, everyone walks about 1/2 mile round trip to an area near the wolf enclosures. There we will attempt to get the wolves to howl by howling ourselves, both singly and in groups. If that doesn't work we use a tape recording of our wolves howling on a previous occasion. Usually, the wolves answer us, but like all wild animals, they are unpredictable. Although rare, sometimes they don't cooperate no matter what we do!

After the wolves have (hopefully) sung their hearts out, everyone returns to have hot cocoa or cider, cookies and an opportunity to purchase items from our gift shop.
