Did you know ...

  • A wolf has 42 teeth.

  • A wolf's odor detecting ability is 100 times greater than mans.

  • The largest gray wolf is the tundra wolf.

  • The smallest gray wolf is the Mexican gray wolf.

  • Wolves howl to assemble the pack, identify individuals and express emotional state.

  • There are two species of wolves: gray wolf and red wolf.  Of the gray wolf, five subspecies exist.  Of the red wolf, only one subspecies, the Mississippi valley red wolf exists.  

  • Currently 28 wild free-ranging Mexican gray wolves are located in the designated recovery zones of Arizona and New Mexico.  

  • There are approximately 200 Mexican grays held at 43 facilities.

  • There are 3 subspecies of red wolves but today only one remains in existence - Canis rufus gregoryi

  • Red wolves have been released back into the wild in: North Carolina, and several island release sites in South Carolina, Florida and Mississippi.

  • There could be as many as 100 red wolves in the wild, but exact numbers are difficult to obtain.
